Analysis of Manufacturing Platforms in the Context of Zero-Defect Process Establishment

This paper proposes a methodology to assist decision-makers on the selection of a more proper device’ system for a specific task. A versatile methodology provides mechanisms for an assessment based on Multi-Criteria with the capacity to apply different Decision Methods, taking also into consideration criteria’ constraints defined by stakeholder’s. This is addressed using a model-driven based approach, which gives support for a high openness to the use of different as well as new, even user-defined decision methods, including criteria and respective constraints through their formal specification.

Smart Digital Twin for ZDM-based job-shop scheduling

This research work considers an initial conceptual smart digital twin (SDT) framework for scheduling job-shop orders in a zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM) environment. The SDT virtually replicates the job-shop scheduling issue to simulate it and, based on the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) methodology, trains a prescriber agent and a process monitor. This simulation and training setting will facilitate analyses, optimization, defect and failure avoidance and, in short, decision making, to improve job-shop scheduling.

Zero-Defect Manufacturing using data-driven technologies to support the natural stone industry

This paper discusses one ZDM use case in the area of the stone slab manufacturing industry. It focuses on industrial stone process automatization as in the stone detection of cracks, voids and other defects through specific applications that explore various techniques as image processing. An analysis of the added value of integrating such applications in the natural stone processing industry considering the zero-defect manufacturing paradigm is explored.

Analysis of relevant standards for industrial systems to support zero defects manufacturing process

In this article we offer an analysis of relevant standards for manufacturing systems which was performed for the Digital Manufacturing Platforms (4DMP) cluster in order to identify those standards that might be relevant for ZDM, as well as for further projects or manufacturing platform designers. The standards covered by this work are aligned with the RAMI 4.0 reference model in order to simplify the design process by interlinking standards with relevant model layers and thus contribute to system's interoperability.

A Novel MILP Model for the Production, Lot Sizing, and Scheduling of Automotive Plastic Components on Parallel Flexible Injection Machines with Setup Common Operators

This paper proposes a mixed integer linear program (MILP) model for the production, lot sizing, and scheduling of automotive plastic components to minimize the setup, inventory, stockout, and backorder costs, by taking into account injection molds as the main index to schedule on parallel flexible injection machines. The proposed MILP considers the minimum and maximum inventory capacities and penalizes stockout. The MILP solves a lot-sizing and scheduling problem, emerged in a second-tier supplier of a real automotive supply chain.

A data model for collaborative manufacturing environments

This paper introduces a novel data model for collaborative manufacturing environments (CMData) by building a taxonomy of data concepts to represent information about the replenishment, production and delivery planning domains. Moreover, this proposal complements and gives an answer to the new cloud collaborative business needs from industry. The CMData has the following objectives: (i) to solve problems related with data interpretation; (ii) to solve the sharing between enterprise legacy systems and cloud environments through the mapping procedure and (iii) to identify the required data coming from different enterprises to collaboratively compute the joint planning activities. The proposed CMData are validated through their application in the collaborative production scheduling plan of a second-tier supplier and a first-tier supplier in the automotive industry.

The H2020 framework of the European Union is eager to support research in the Industry 4.0 domain for the European manufacturers to gain a competitive advantage through better digitization. This document depicts the most important Horizon 2020 platform projects in the manufacturing domain of Industry 4.0 in the last 10 years, e.g. vf-OS, CREMA, to demonstrate which issues hindered dissemination of these platforms in the past and how the following projects such as ZDMP are evolving to get a foothold in the market by 2022-2023.

To characterize and optimize Low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) networks, the authors have developed an optimized use of the adaptative data rate (ADR) mechanism for uplink, proposed its use also for downlink based on the simulator ns-3, and then defined an industrial scenario to test and validate the proposed solution in terms of packet loss and energy.

Security Implications of Interoperability

The presented paper investigates the relationship between interoperability and system security. This is mainly an optimisation problem, since making a system interoperable means that some APIs need to be exposed, which can potentially open the system to malicious attacks. The paper explores the use of the System Security Modeller (SSM) tool which allows an assessment of the cost of interoperability by calculating the security risks. The security implications of interoperability are illustrated through a case study representing a smart manufacturing scenario.

A European Manufacturing Platform for Zero-Defects

This paper presents the European Manufacturing Platform for Zero-Defects build in the frame of the H2020 project entitled “Zero Defect Manufacturing Platform” (ZDMP). The ZDMP project combines state of the art technological approaches based on commercial grade standard or open-source or previous-project software with an innovative integration concept based on proven and integrating technologies. It provides Process and Product Quality support on top of a platform layer. These all can utilize ZDMP core services which can also be used to build ZD Apps which are placed on the ZD Marketplace.

ZDMP Technical Challenge

This work encompasses technical foundation of the ZDMP project including overall architecture, specifications, as well as development activities from both a functional and technical point of view. After the initial phase, when requirements, including functional, non-functional and technical, were identified, users and RTD providers have worked together to deliver mock-ups for each envisioned application. These activities resulted in a technical specification document, defining concrete interfaces between ZDMP components, protocols, and class/package structures. Moreover, development and utilization of components is accomplished in line the latest standardization efforts.

Zero Defects Manufacturing Platform (ZDMP) is an initiative aimed at providing the necessary platform and tools to facilitate the transformation to the 4th industrial revolution. One of the key points remains the processing of large amount of heterogeneous data. The core components of the ZDMP fulfil the participants’ needs in terms of data acquisition, transformation and analysis, orchestration, monitor and alerting, as well as providing key technical solutions for distributed and autonomous computing. In this regard, this work covers Work Package 5 (WP 5) components, addressing core service and middleware for data management.

Many aspects of Industry 4.0 are only made possible by the Internet of Things. Data on production output and quality, operating status etc. can be monitored in real time, but can also be included in the planning and control of production. The scenarios for using this data differ in their degree of integration. In any case, big-data technologies are necessary to gain the full benefit from the data. One such benefit is the coupling of data analysis results from the Internet of Things, especially real-time analytics, with business processes.

A Technical Approach to Achieve Zero Defects Manufacturing Process in the ZDMP Project

This paper describes the technical approach to develop solutions to control manufacturing process quality, through the supporting services provided by the Zero Defects Manufacturing Platform (ZDMP). The approach is based on preventive and corrective strategies to avoid quality losses, by extracting meaningful insights from sensor data and other data sources. Quality Management is carried out at different stages along the manufacturing process, whereas ZDMP covers three stages: Pre-production, Production, and Production: Equipment Performance. The goal is to predict and prevent losses, provide deeper process insights and analytics, and learn from the decisions made to enhance process automation.

Modelling, predicting, inspecting and supervising product quality for Zero Defects Manufacturing in ZDMP Project

This work addresses development process of solutions to control manufacturing product quality based on supporting services provided by the Zero Defect Manufacturing Platform. Solutions are of preventing and inspecting types, relying upon sensor data and other product and process information. Preventing strategies can be split into two different approaches: (i) prediction techniques relying on machine learning to model correlation between the product quality and data collected, and (ii) identification of anomalies and critical trends during production. In its turn, product inspection takes advantage of various types of visual sensors and processing tools allowing detection of a whole range of defects.

Digital Manufacturing Cluster Evaluation Methodology

Nowadays enterprises, to remain competitive and to discover the new business opportunities are forced to find the new ways and forms of collaboration. One possible solution is establishment of business clusters that include not only enterprises, but also the academic units introducing new technologies and business models. However, one of the main concerns related to the establishment of manufacturing clusters targets aspects, such as partners’ selection, business opportunities identification, etc. In this paper we present a framework intended to provide the necessary basis for establishment of successful clusters with the support of an evaluation initiative.

A Benchmarking of Reference Models for Digital Manufacturing Platforms

This paper presents a benchmarking of different reference models for Industry 4.0, using available alignment reports as a tool for benchmarking, a qualitative indicator to assess the relevance of the definitions in the different reference models, and an assessment using existing implementations and proposals as a starting point for future benchmark use cases. The main objective of the benchmark is to facilitate the adoption of reference models for the architectural definition of new digital manufacturing platforms. It can also be useful for the definition of new reference models for specific application domains or meta-models to map features of different reference models in a common framework.

Manufacturing a product is the result of entangled processes spanning different companies that exchange products usually in not exclusive contracts. Based on a theory-building research methodology through the literature and other information sources review, the main contribution of this paper is the current characterisation of the emerging low-code domain following the foundations of the computer-aided software engineering field. A context analysis, focused on the current status of research related to the low-code development platforms, is performed. Moreover, benchmarking among the existing low-code development platforms addressed to manufacturing industry is analysed to identify the current lacking features.

Cyber-Physical Systems: a multi-criteria assessment for Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems

This article addresses a multi-criteria decision problem regarding the more suitable device (system) to perform a task for cyber-physical systems. New embedded systems provided everyday makes engineers’ decision very difficult. Components are proposed to formally describe solutions, criteria, constraints and priorities, taking into account users’ specific aspects. To materialise all formal descriptions, a model-driven approach is followed, allowing the design of enablers for interoperability with standards. Proposed framework enables a better Internet-of-Things system selection, and therefore stakeholders can perform a more suitable design of their cyber-physical enterprise systems.

Reference Models for Digital Manufacturing Platforms

Digital manufacturing platforms use IIoT systems in combination with other added-value services to support manufacturing processes at different levels, with different stakeholders involved. This research analyses prominent reference models for IIoT systems to align the definitions they contain and determine to what extent they are complementary and applicable to digital manufacturing platforms. Based on this analysis, the Industrial Internet Integrated Reference Model (I3RM) for digital manufacturing platforms is presented, together with general recommendations that can be applied to the architectural definition of any digital manufacturing platform.

Implementing a Human-Robot Collaborative Assembly Workstation

This article presents a human-robot collaborative assembly workstation, composed by the ABB YuMi robot that interacts with a human operator in order to assembly a product box, as a part of a large-scale process. Assembly process, workstation design, implementation and its validation are illustrated. Then, this paper aims to summarize advantages and challenges of implementing cobots – robots collaborating with humans to jointly accomplish working tasks, by exemplifying a real scenario of collaborative interaction between a cobot and a human operator, feasible to implement at any industrial facility.
